New childrens’ gradings

In line with its policy of adapting classes to the average age of the participants, GKR has announced that the grading criteria for children aged 12 and younger has now been changed.

Instead of learning kata for the first two grades, children will now have to demonstrate competence in basic stances and techniques.

The following are the new grading requirements for under 13s:


Yellow tag Attend 6 classes
Yellow belt Attend 12 classes and learn the following:
Strikes
Chudan tsuki (stomach punch)
Jodan tsuki (head punch)
Shita tsuki (short punch)
Mawashi empi (round elbow)
Blocks
Jodan age uke (head-level rising block)
Soto uke (outside block)
Gedan barai (down block)
Kicks
Mae geri (front kick)
Mawashi geri (round kick)
Stances
Zenkutsu dachi (forward stance)
Kiba dachi (horse stance)
Shiko dachi (sumo stance)
Orange belt Everything required for yellow belt and a further 16 classes plus the following:
Strikes
Ura uchi (forward backfist)
Yoke ura uchi (side backfist)
Hiji ate (rising elbow)
Blocks
Uchi uke (inside block)
Gedan uke (low level block)
Kicks
Yoko geri (side kick)
Ushiro geri (back kick)
Green belt Everything required for orange belt and a further 20 classes plus the following:
Strikes
Soto shuto uchi (outside knife-hand strike)
Uchi shuto uchi (inside knife-hand strike)
Haito uchi (ridge-hand strike)
Blocks
Chuge uke (double block)
Kake uke (hooking block)
Mawashi uke (round block)
Shuto uke (knife-hand block)
Stances
Kokutso dachi (back stance) - stance only
Sanchin dachi (hourglass/pigeon-toed stance)

1st and 2nd katas
Blue belt Everything required for green belt and a further 20 classes plus the following:
Kata Saifa
Red belt From this point on, the chiildren and adults' grading requirements are the same
